1. Getting Started with BifrostTV

BifrostTV is designed for Apple TV running tvOS 16.0 or later. When you first launch BifrostTV, the application will display an initial setup screen inviting you to add your first media source.

  • Ensure your Apple TV is connected to the internet (via Wi-Fi or Ethernet).
  • Have your M3U playlist URL, local stream address, or XMLTV EPG URL ready.

2. Adding an M3U / M3U8 Playlist

BifrostTV supports standard M3U and extended M3U8 playlist formats containing HTTP, HTTPS, and HLS stream links.

  • Direct Input: Navigate to Settings > Playlists > Add Playlist on your Apple TV and type or paste your playlist URL.
  • Using Companion Setup (Recommended): Use the Local Setup web page on your phone or laptop to paste the URL without using the TV remote.
  • Playlist Caching: Once added, BifrostTV parses and categorizes the channels into groups automatically for fast offline navigation.

3. Adding EPG / XMLTV Electronic Program Guides

To view real-time program schedules and upcoming show listings:

  • Go to Settings > Program Guide (EPG) > Add EPG URL.
  • Enter the URL of your XMLTV (.xml or .xml.gz) source.
  • BifrostTV will map channels by their tvg-id or channel name and refresh the program guide in the background.

4. Personal Media Library Setup

BifrostTV can access compatible personal video streams, local media servers (e.g. Plex/Jellyfin/Emby direct video URLs or local NAS feeds):

  • Add direct HTTP/HTTPS video stream URLs under Media Library > Add Stream.
  • Supported container formats include HLS (.m3u8), MP4, and TS streams supported by Apple's AVFoundation framework.

5. Local Setup from Another Device (Local Wi-Fi)

Typing long URLs on an Apple TV remote can be tedious. BifrostTV includes a built-in local web server:

  1. On Apple TV, open Settings > Local Setup.
  2. Note the local IP address displayed on your TV screen (for example: http://192.168.1.50:8080).
  3. Open that URL in Safari or Chrome on your iPhone, iPad, or Mac connected to the same Wi-Fi network.
  4. Paste your playlist, EPG, or media links directly in the browser and tap Save to Apple TV.

6. Parental PIN Controls

You can restrict access to specific channel categories or adult streams:

  • Go to Settings > Parental Controls.
  • Default Parental PIN: If no PIN was previously set, the default initial factory PIN is 0000.
  • Change the PIN to a unique 4-digit code. The PIN is encrypted and stored in the secure Apple tvOS Keychain.
  • Select the channel categories or groups you want to require PIN authorization for.

7. Resetting Application Configuration

If you need to clear all playlists, cached EPG data, or restore factory defaults:

  • Open Settings > Advanced > Reset Application.
  • Select Clear Cache to refresh EPG and channel indexes without removing playlists.
  • Select Factory Reset to delete all configured playlists, custom favorites, and reset parental PINs.

8. Troubleshooting & Frequently Asked Questions

Playlist Does Not Load / Error 404 or 403

Verify that the playlist URL is active and accessible. Some providers restrict requests based on User-Agent or require active subscription tokens. Verify the URL in a browser first.

EPG / XMLTV Guide Is Empty

Check that your XMLTV URL is reachable. Program guide data can take 1–2 minutes to parse and index upon first import. Ensure channel identifiers (tvg-id) match between your playlist and EPG.

Channel Fails to Play / Black Screen

Check that the stream protocol (HLS / MPEG-TS) is supported. If a specific channel does not play, test other channels in the list to determine if the issue is provider-specific or network-related.

Local Setup Page Unavailable / Cannot Connect

Ensure both your Apple TV and your phone/computer are connected to the exact same local Wi-Fi subnet (not guest Wi-Fi). Ensure tvOS Local Network permissions are granted.

Local Network Permission Denied

Open Apple TV Settings > General > Privacy & Security > Local Network, locate BifrostTV, and ensure the toggle is set to On.

Media Source Not Reachable

If connecting to a home NAS or personal streaming server, verify that the server's local IP address has not changed and that any authentication headers or credentials are correctly specified.

Forgot Parental PIN

Try the default factory PIN 0000. If you set a custom PIN and forgot it, perform a factory reset through Settings > Advanced > Reset Application or reinstall the app.

Restoring Factory Settings

To completely wipe all local settings, delete the BifrostTV app from tvOS (long press the app icon on Home screen > Delete App), then reinstall it from the App Store.
